Trade Post: Nachos Grande

As i was going through some of my random hit cards, I noticed I had a Barry Larkin card that didn’t have a great place in my collection.  I knew someone who would appreciate it though, Chris over at Nachos Grande!  I sent him the card and he was able to put together a trifecta of cardboard that I can definitely use for my team and player sets.

At this point in my blogging days, I am a very difficult trade partner as my lists are incomplete…and I have a good amount of cards for the teams and players I collect.  Chris was able to find three cards that I do not have…I used to have the Theismann, but it’s gone awol, as has the single bar face mask.

Thanks for the cards Nachos Grande!  They will find a home in their respective binder soon.

A&G Hater

Alright, just as a fair warning to anyone reading.  I’m not a fan of Allen & Ginter.  In fact, I don’t like the A&G set…but, i always buy a couple of packs each season with the hopes that my interest will be peaked.  This year i splurged and dropped $12 on 3 packs from Hoopla Sports, another LCS in good ol’ Beaverton.  Twelve dollars bought me a whole lotta nothingness and left an empty place in my soul.

My problem isn’t with the base cards, the photos or the card stock.  I think all three of those things are great! Especially when you can pull a card of Werth’s sweet ass beard AND Hammerin’ Hank in those sweet 70’s Braves unis.  The power of that beard and the flowing locks adjacent to the the iconic humility of the true home run king is priceless, especially as part of a base set.

You also get some great action photos of superbly talented young shortstops making nice plays going to their left…with a soccer haircut.  You also get a base landscape.  LOVE.

13 AG Troy Tulowitzki

But here is where the wheels fall off for me as i roll down this steep hill to hell.  I get cards like this.  Tommy Lee…seems to me like this should have been a landscape card, eh?

For me though, this is the ultimate reason i hate strongly dislike the A&G set.  Miss Universe and some dude with a paintball gun.  What The F**K!!  A Russian paintballer that has the ability to never forget the amazing people he has met…that’s what the back of the card told me.  Well, that’s great.  I googled him and could only find information on a Matthias Blonski that is an apparently highly motivated and creative graphic designer.  Good for him.  Now, Ms. Olivia Culpo.  Although she is quite stunning and appears to be talented as well as intelligent, i don’t want her rookie card.  To me this is a waste of card stock.  It has no place in my collection.  Maybe one of you kids out there have a Miss Universe PC you’re working on, but i don’t.

My rants are almost over…only three cards left.

The subsets, oh the subsets.  These are just a couple of the subsets i pulled a card from.  Martial Mastery, Knights and Civilizations of Ages Past, Vikings.  Knights and Vikings.  Again, don’t have a place for these guys.  My PC consists of baseball and football players, not nordic pagans or dudes from the Cantebury Tales.  I guess i can start a Chaucer or Marauders PC?  Thoughts?

13 AG Civilization of Ages Martial Mystery

Ok, last card.  Just like any good American, I love a good manmade canal.  Anything to facilitate the trafficking of goods from east to west…and definitely anything to avoid Cape Horn!  I’m being a little sarcastic here if you can’t tell, but i would actually love to visit the Panama Canal at some point in my life…not really sure why, but it’s one of those things I would love to see in action.  Maybe i can take my card with me?

So, i vented a little.  I know a lot of you guys love the Allen & Ginter and I think that’s great…it’s just not a set for me.  But hey, I absolutely love Heritage and will continue to collect that set each year.  I will also continue to buy a pack or two of Allen & Ginter and feel empty inside…if any of the card above interest you, please let me know.  Send me your address and they will be yours for free!  I have the remainders of the three packs as well.

At the end of the day, I guess that’s what makes collecting these pieces of card stock so great.  We can have things we love that no one else does, and vice versa.  Good night and good luck with that Gint-a-Cuffs thing everyone is doing.

Rickey Henderson additions to my PC +1 Jeter

Since i’ve gotten the blog up and running again, one thing I really wanted to do was be more proactive in picking up new Rickey Henderson cards, or at least new to me.  I’ve been a huge fan of his since I first started collecting in 1985 and was able to collect all of his base cards and some oddball stuff from the 80’s through the mid-90’s.  When i gave up collecting for a few years, roughly 1995-2006, i missed out on a lot of his cards and have been playing catch up ever since.

Recently, my targets have been anything that isn’t an autograph or an outrageously short print/low serial numbered card.  Focusing on base cards, parallels, inserts and nice looking jersey cards that I can find easily and cost friendly.  For some reason or another, his cards are extremely difficult to spot at the card shows I go to as well as my LCS…no idea why.  I never have any issues finding Tony Gwynn, Ken Griffey Jr. or Cal Ripken Jr. cards, equally great players from around the same era…but the Rickey Henderson cards are difficult if not impossible to find.  I have no idea why this is?  Is it that he is such a popular player and people are hoarding his cards?  Or maybe people don’t like him as much as the other players from his era?

When he was playing, especially near the end of his career, there was some negativity towards him.  He had a rough end with the Mets.  Seemingly played one year for every team on the west coast.  Tried many times to land with the A’s for a late season push.  Whatever the reason, there was some negativity around him.  During his heyday, he was an extremely popular player and dynamic player.  He was also one of the few guys from the early years of the steroid era that seemed to be clean.

He is also a player, in my mind that is the only ‘greatest ____ of all time’ that can’t be argued with.  Maybe I’m wrong on this one, but I believe he is not only the greatest base stealer of all time, but the single greatest leadoff hitter.  Maybe i’m biased, but I cannot think of any other player you could say something like this about, much less two things?  Who is the greatest Home Run hitter?  Greatest Center Fielder?  Greatest Catcher, Pitcher?  All of these topics draw major debate, but when i comes to the leadoff position and base stealing, There is no one better than Rickey, and that is one of the reasons why he is my all time favorite baseball player.  I will keep looking for cards when i’m out and see who has anything new and exciting, I will also check in with the great Rickey Henderson Collectibles website to see what’s new and fantastic in the world of Rickey.

So without further adieu, here are a few images from my latest visit to the ebay and the LCS. (some of these cards may not be that new and exciting to you guys, but they are new to my collection and make me happy!)

The first card is a good ol’ fashioned hologram from the mid 90’s.  Upper Deck put all their chips in on this technology and it didn’t quite work out for them…did it?  The Denny’s cards are pretty classic though and a must have for your binders.  From different angles, it looks like you have a silver-ish card with no image and from others, you can see the Man of Steal!  Thank you Denny’s, this one set me back one hundred pennies.

The next two cars are from this years Topps set, The Greats insert and a Game Used Memorabilia Chasing History card.  Both were bid on and won by yours truly from the electronic bay.  I’m hit or miss on bidding from stuff at ebay as i have found the sellers/buyers difficult to deal with at times.  When i do purchase stuff from ebay i go low budget in order to avoid any real issues.  Both of these cards set me back about $7 shipped.  I love the old and new Rickey on the cards.  Classic vs. Legend.

The last one is the Allen and Ginter base card from last years set.

I also picked up this beast, Derek Jeter, from the 1998 Zenith set.  This set came out in a period when i was collecting things not on cardboard.  I seem to remember Stale Gum doing a box break on these odd ball giants and attempting to find a way to get the mini card out of the big card without damaging the big card…or the mini card.  Many attempts were made and a valiant effort was given.  I’m just glad these things don’t exist anymore…except with A&G, i guess their stuff is ok, right?
