A DC Die Cut Delivery Day

I came home to a few PWE’s with my name on them and a rigid piece of something in them.  It’s card delivery day! YAY!  I’m sure those cards were just waiting to get delivered to my mailbox after the holiday yesterday.  Ironically all three cards were die cut cards of young DC sports stars…and here they are!

13 PS Jordan Reed Die Cut

The Jordan Reed card is probably my favorite as it appears to have the least amount of surface area and was a little tricky to get the 2.5″x3.5″ box around the card when I scanned it.  It’s a pretty simple card.  No flash, no serial number, but the perimeter of the card is quite nice.

13 TC Stephen Strasburg Die Cut

The Stephen Strasburg card is also pretty cool.  This one is a little more flashy since it’s from the Topps Chrome collection.  This one seems like it should have a stand in the back so you can display it somewhere nice.

13 BP Bryce Harper Cutting Edge Stars Die Cut

The man-child Bryce Harper with the mountain main beard was the last card I received.  Only minor die cut action going on here, but Bowman Platinum is always a nice card.  Plus with Topps pledging to bring me closer to the game from the past, present and future, I feel good about these three going in to my player collections.  I should add these to the page, eh?

Reed Book(let)s

Here is the next gem of a card to add to my ever growing Jordan Reed collection.  This one is a booklet.  My first Reed booklet and my 3rd overall (2 Leonard Hankerson’s).

This was a pickup from the Mall 205 card show I attended last Saturday…which was lightly attended.  I guess most of the dealers come down from Seattle and wanted to watch the Seahawks put a hurtin’ on the poor Saints…so they decided to stay home rather than make the three hour drive.

I was pulling for the Saints to knock off the heavily favored Seahawks and so was the VERY talented Australian actress Margo Robbie.  I have no idea why an Australian lady actress would be a Saints fan, but whatever…

https://twitter.com/MargotRobbie/statuses/422208544872873984

…we were both heartbroken…If you haven’t seen The Wolf of Wall Street and are ok with gratuitous everything and anything, then you should kill 3 hours as soon as they can be killed by you.  Beats driving to Seattle (I LOVE Seattle, just not the drive…LOVE IT!!!)

Getting back to the card since this is card blog.  The guy that i picked the Reed from had purchased it from e-bay specifically for me.  Pretty cool huh?  That’s what i love about these shows.  You attend them enough and chat up the guys, they will go out of their way to find things for you…and not mark up the price!  This is a great example of the hobby and what it can be.  Very cool…too bad I can’t remember the kids name!!??!?!!

Black Friday Reeds

Going back to Black Friday.  As I mentioned earlier, I jumped all over the COMC.com Black Friday sale and picked up some very nice Jordan Reed cards.  These are the kind of cards that you want to put in nice card holders and present on some prominent shelf in your sports card room.  I don’t have a sports card room, so they will be shown here on the blog.

Here are the player worn patch/player worn relic/player worn memorabilia cards in landscape format.  The first one is from Topps Inception.  I love these cards with the very cool over processed images and intense photography.  Plus it’s number 1 of 93.  What’s up with the random number 93?

13 TI Jordan Reed Player Worn Patch 1:93

Next up is Bowman Sterling with Mr. Reed staring very intensely into the cameraman’s lens.

13 BS Jordan Reed Relic 671:1214

And here is a quad patch numbered to 75.

13 TP Jordan Reed Quad Patch 68:75

Here is the autograph portion of the post.  The Bowman card along with the three above are super thick cards that barely fit into a penny sleeve.  It’s kind of a shame that a card this thick and nice is a sticker auto.

13 BS Jordan Reed Autograph

The next card is from this years Prizm set.  I love Prizm.

13 PP Jordan Reed Auto

For the last two cards, you will notice they are crazy die cut cards with reflective shiny-ness all over them.  I love the die cut cards, but they can be a pain to put back in the penny sleeves.

13 TF Jordan Reed Finest Atomic Rookies Die Cut

This one was more difficult to put back in the sleeves.  Not putting the toothpaste back in the tube difficult, but difficult no less.  I happened to scan these along with the thicker cards, so pardon the shadows…although they create a nice depth to the card and the angles.  So nice!

13 TC Jordan Reed Die Cut

If you are in your late 30’s like me and love some good ole Hip Hop, then you should listen to this as I am doing right now.  This takes me back…life moves way too quick.

PS – I’ve updated my 1970’s Redskins checklist…check it out if you think you have something to help me complete my team sets.

Sick Pickups!

The title is true, but not in the douchey overused term that is used way too much in this hobby today.  My whole family was sick, including me.  The wife and baby had the H1N1, aka swine flu and luckily i avoided it.  There has been a minor breakout of this strand of flu in Portland and SW Washington…but i somehow missed out, I guess I’m just strong like that!

The sick pickup part comes in to play with an evening visit to Target to get a few physical mending supplies like juices, fruits and drugs.  I’ve been avoiding retail packs for a while now because of the unlikeliness of getting anything worthwhile.  I ended up buying a few packs just to see what the cards look like, knowing I wouldn’t be happy with any of them.  I guess I was delirious and more than happy to fill my slightly sick body with new shiny football cards.  Here are some fun scans of what i spent my hard earned loot on.

The first pack was Absolute Football from the fine folks over at Panini.  I pulled two QB’s that I have a lot of respect for, even though i can’t stand either of their teams.  The Cowboys dislike should be obvious…they are the hated rivals.

13 AF Tony Romo

The Seahawks one may not be as clear for you.  I find their fans to be a little over the top.  I’ve been to football games in Dallas, Houston, Seattle, New Orleans and DC.  The fans in Seattle are hands down the most belligerent and a little too handsy for my liking.  Plus they act as though they’ve won 3 Super Bowls.  They haven’t, but the Redskins have.  Now, that’s not to take anything away from Wilson.  I think he is great.  I actually love the kid.  He’s modest and works really hard and I believe he is going to become one of the leagues great QB’s.  He’s also an underdog which I always love.

13 AF Russell Wilson

I also managed to pull a serial numbered Phillip Thomas card.

13 PP Phillip Thomas 411:499

Next up is Topps Prime.  The base cards of this set are decent.  I feel that the photos are way too tight on the players and would love to see a full photo of the athletes…maybe that sounds weird if you read it out loud, but I think you know what i mean.  Is it me or is Milliner’s smile a little goofy?

13 TP Rob Gronkowski Dee Milliner

Jordan Reed!  I have the hobby version of this card, now the thinner retail version is in my sole possession.

13 TP Jordan Reed

Ok, so this next card really caught me off guard.  Is this seriously the best photo Topps could get of Matt Ryan?  I have to believe there are at least 15 other photos that could have been used, but they chose this shot.  He’s even staring in to the camera while giving his center the business!  I’m sure Mrs. Ryan is none too happy about the photo immortalized on card stock…at least it’s not a butt fumble card…Mr. Sanchez…

13 TP Matt Ryan

The final pack was PRIZM.  YES!  I loved Prizm last year and I think this years cards are equally as nice.  Love the quality of the card, the texture and photography of them as well.  Target has a small rack pack that came with 3 red parallel cards, and here are two of them.  Both are often injured RB’s.  These red cards have a nice sparkle to them, almost like a disco ball or some fancy pop star sequence…very shimmery when viewed in person.

13 PP Ryan Mathews Red Target Parallel

Spankee, if you like the Wilson…it’s yours.

13 PP David Wilson Red Target Parallel

Here are two more cards.  Michael Vick.  He would look good in the Burgundy and Gold next year as a backup to RGIII and could teach him how to survive in the NFL.  Maybe teach him how to slide too?  Or just run out of bound before being tackled?  #justsayin

13 PP Michael Vick

Kenjon Barner.  Showing this one because he’s a Duck and so am I…sort of.

13 PP Kenjon Barner

The last two cards came from the Prizm pack.  I’m guessing they are not part of any Prizm insert or chase set as they have none of the qualities of Prizm.  BUT, they do have a QR code on the back that takes you to an online video.  Unfortunately Kenny Stills doesn’t explain his hair in the interview which I think is a huge missed opportunity.  Terrance Williams broke my heart this afternoon, but that’s nothing new.

Rookie Autos!

I think the 2013 Redskin rookie class could be a pretty good one.  Most of their performances were overshadowed by injuries, lack of playing time or just not being ready for NFL action.  One of my favorites and a guy that i’ve been picking up a lot of cards of has been Jordan Reed.  One of the knocks on him coming out of Florida was his tendency to suffer injuries, or not being able to play through the injuries.  He has been shut down for the remainder of the season due to a concussion.  I’m hoping this isn’t a precursor to future issues with him as he’s shown to be a player with a ton of upside.

I have a pink chrome refractor card autographed by Mr. Reed…This is a very masculine card.

13 TC Jordan Reed Pink Refractor Auto 12:75

…and a nice fancy topps base card auto that is unfortunately a sticker auto.

13 TO Jordan Reed Auto

Another kid that i’ve been really excited to see play has been Jawan Jamison.  He’s been on the practice squad for most of the year and made the roster last week, but was inactive for the Falcons game.  I’m hoping he can see the field against Dallas this weekend and get some good runs in…all over the field agains the Cowteam.

JJ has an extremely tiny signature, but it’s numbered to 25.  This card was picked up at the last card show i went to that Tom had pulled for me.  He told me he had a nice short print autograph card for me that i could have for free if i could name the player.  I said Alfred Morris, wishful thinking i guess…didn’t get the card for free, but I got my usual great deal from Tom and was very pleased to walk away with this platinum #1 beauty.

13 TP Jawan Jamison Auto 1:25It’s a little weird seeing a Redskin wear #47 and it not be Chris Coooooooley!

Metal Reed 1/1

Ok, it’s been a helluva long time since i posted.  My absence is due to many reasons, one of them is of course the fact that my Redskins have tanked this season.  I thought the first Eagles game was an aberration, but i was wrong…coincidentally, my last post was after the first game on Monday night.  I’ve still been collecting and picking up new items…just inspired or motivated to scan and post them.  But guess what bitches, i’m back!

13 PA Jordan Reed PP F M

As i may have mentioned in an earlier post, i’ve been on a printing plate binge of sorts.  Focusing my collection on 1/1’s.  Plus I like light gauges of metal in the colors of C-M-Y and K.  Here is one plate that i recently picked up on the electronic bay.  Jordan Reed.  He’s Magenta, M in your 4-letter color coding system.  It’s cool to turn the metal over and see ‘Congratulations’.  Being an only child, i could never get enough accolades.  So seeing it on a Redskins card is pretty awesome even I wasn’t the first person to see it, but you can see it right here!

13 AM Jordan Reed PP B M

Some of you fantasy leaguers out there should take note of this kid.  He’s going to be something special.  If only he can manage to stay healthy and on the field.  Seems to be struggling with that so far.  But i have high expectations for 2014.  That will be the Redskins year.  #HTTR

Rookie R******S Autos

I got some nice autographs!  Wanna See!

I got a great deal on them…and really happy to jump on these cards before they go through the roof, because as we all know, the football team from Washington is going to be great once again!  -HTTR!

I’m going to go alphabetically by first name, so the first player is Brandon Jenkins from Florida State University and his Bowman Chrome Refractor.  The light in the scanner is making this thing look like a urine stained card…but trust me, it’s in mint condition and smells wonderful.

13 BO Brandon Jenkins Chrome Auto

Next up, we have Chris Thompson, also from FSU (pronounced ay-fay-shu).  Since Shanahan has been the head coach slash GM, the football team from Washington has tended to draft multiple players from the same school in their drafts.  I have no idea if this is common place around the league since i tend to not pay too much attention to the other teams drafts…but it’s a little curious.

13 UD Chris Thompson Auto

  • 2010 – Perry Riley and Dennis Morris from LSU
  • 2011 – Roy Helu, DeJon Gomes and Niles Paul from Nebraska
  • 2012 – Josh LeRibeus and Richard Crawford from SMU (Aldrick Robinson from the 2011 draft)
  • 2013 – Chris Thompson and Brandon Jenkins from Florida State

The next couple of guys will hopefully have a huge impact this season.  Jawan Jamison and Jordan Reed.  Jamison is coming off a pretty solid career at Rutgers, but was injured in his last season.  I guess he’s one of those big upside guys that you either hit a home run with or strike out with…but don’t lose too much in the loss.

13 BO Jawan Jamison Chrome Auto

Jordan Reed is quite intriguing.  He has mentioned in the very recent past that Aaron Hernandez was a role model of his and someone that he looked up to while he was at Florida…kind of scary since the darkside of Hernandez is being peeled back each day and only getting worse.  Let’s hope that Reed was only referencing Hernandez for his on-field abilities and not his propensity to murder people…allegedly…of course.  Innocent until proven guilty.
